The January Reset Moms Need (besides organizing closets)

January always comes with a long list of things we want to organize. Closets. Pantries. Calendars.

And while those things matter, there’s one area most moms quietly stress about and almost never tackle:

Our photos!

If your phone is full of thousands of images — screenshots mixed with sports photos, blurry moments, duplicates, and “I’ll delete this later”….. you’re documenting a full life.

But digital clutter has a way of making even beautiful memories feel overwhelming. So, this January, instead of trying to organize everything, here’s a reset that actually works for moms.

Why Photo Organization Feels So Hard (Especially for Moms)

Photos aren’t just files. They’re memories. That’s why organizing them feels heavier than cleaning out a drawer.

Most moms hesitate because:

  • “What if I delete something important?”
  • “I don’t have time to go through years of photos.”
  • “It’s just too much and not important at this moment.”

Here’s the mindset shift that changes everything:

👉 You don’t need to organize the past to create a better system going forward!!! I love this!

A Simple January Photo Reset

1. Start With This Year Only. Forget old photos for now. Truly.

Create one main folder or album called:
2026 Family Photos

Inside it, add monthly folders: January, Febuary, March, and so on.

As new photos are taken this year, drop them into the correct month. That’s it! That one step alone creates a process you can begin now.

2. Do a Weekly 5-Minute Photo Reset

Once a week: Delete obvious duplicates and screenshots you don’t need. And definitely delete the accidental bursts or videos. I try to do this when I’m sitting in car line.

3. Create “Forever” Albums

These are the albums that make printing and sharing easy later.

You could organize them by child or vacations, etc.

  • Kids Favorites – milestones, personalities, the moments you love most
  • Family Life – holidays, vacations, everyday moments
  • Print This – anything you know you’ll want off your phone someday

When you find a photo you love, drop it into one of these and move on.

4. Back Everything Up Once — Then Let It Go

Choose one backup system: icloud, google photos or an external hardrive. Set it up and try to begin using immediately. Having that peace of mind can also help you feel better.

The Part Moms Always Appreciate Later: Printing

Here’s something I see all the time as a photographer. Most moms don’t regret the photos they didn’t take but take the time to print some too. They don’t all need to go into a frame but having a box of prints to look back on is fun too!

When photos live only on your phone, that takes the joy away from the memory. Even printing a small batch once a year turns everyday moments into something lasting.

You don’t need albums everywhere. You just need something tangible. My mom mlikes to takes my albums that I upload to shutterfly and makes us a clalendar and a “yearbook” everyeyar. We love them! It’s fun to grab old yearbooks and look back on our family memories. We always find ourselves laughing remembering things that we had forgotten.

A Gentle January Reminder

This reset isn’t about perfection. Start small. And let this year’s moments be easier to find, enjoy, and remember.
