If you’ve been thinking about booking fall family photos in Chester County, PA, you picked the perfect season. The falls around here are amazing! The leaves explode into color, the weather is crisp but comfortable, and the golden evening light makes everything look like a postcard.
As a Chester County family photographer, I know the question I hear most is: “Where should we go for our photos?” The good news is we’re surrounded by some of the most beautiful backdrops in Pennsylvania. Below I’m sharing my favorite local locations, plus a few tips to make your fall family photo session stress-free.
Why Choose Fall for Family Photos?
- Stunning fall foliage: Peak color usually happens in late October through early to mid November, making every background vibrant.
- Perfect weather: No more sticky summer heat, and we’re not bundled in winter coats yet. Just cozy sweater weather!
- Timeless vibe: Autumn photos have a warm, nostalgic feel. So ideal for family portraits that look amazing on holiday cards and your walls.

Best Chester County Locations for Fall Family Photos
1. Okehocking Preserve – Newtown Square
With open fields, rustic stone walls, and wooded trails, Okehocking Preserve is one of my most-requested spots for fall family photography. It offers variety, and the soft golden light here is unbeatable.

2. Brandywine River Museum of Art – Chadds Ford
Known for its Wyeth art collection, the Brandywine River Museum of Art is also a stunning photo location. The riverside paths, historic stone buildings, and fall foliage make it one of my favorite places in Chadds Ford for family photos.

3. Ridley Creek State Park – Media
If you’re looking for variety, Ridley Creek State Park has it all: woodsy trails, stone bridges, open fields, and historic architecture. In the fall, the colors here are jaw-dropping, and it works beautifully for both big families and intimate sessions.

4. West Chester Borough
Downtown West Chester brings small-town charm with brick sidewalks, tree-lined streets, and historic buildings. If your family loves a mix of urban and cozy, this is a unique spot for fall portraits.

5. Valley Forge National Historical Park
Okay, technically straddling Chester and Montgomery counties, but worth mentioning! Rolling hills, historic buildings, and big skies that look incredible in autumn light.
6. At Home in Your Own Backyard
Sometimes the best backdrop is the one that’s most personal. Whether it’s your front porch, a favorite tree, or the backyard where your kids play, in-home sessions can capture authentic, relaxed family moments.

Other Hidden Gems Around Chester County
While these are some of my most-requested spots, don’t underestimate the smaller parks and tucked-away corners around Chester County. A quiet neighborhood park, a favorite walking trail, or even a patch of trees down the street can transform into the perfect backdrop with the right angles and lighting. At the end of the day, it’s less about the location itself and more about having a photographer who knows how to find beautiful light and scenery anywhere.
Take this location for an example. Its literally my neighbors driveway! I love it for pictures in the fall!!

Tips for Stress-Free Fall Family Sessions
- Choose your outfits wisely. Neutrals, earth tones, and jewel tones (think navy, burgundy, emerald) photograph beautifully against the rich fall backdrop. Add cozy layers like cardigans, scarves, or vests for both warmth and texture.
- Need inspiration? Pinterest is a goldmine for outfit ideas. I even put together a What to Wear Pinterest board to get you started. Another favorite resource is Style and Select’s Instagram page. They’re always on top of the trends and share amazing family outfit combinations.
- Plan for golden hour: In fall, the sun sets earlier — most sessions start around 4–5 pm to catch the dreamy evening light.
- Focus on fun: Don’t stress about perfect smiles. Some of the best images come from kids tossing leaves, running down a path, or twirling in their new boots.
