Beach Photography Sessions at the NJ Shore: Tips for Picture-Perfect Memories

The Shore Thing: Your Guide to Beach Family Photo Sessions

There’s just something about the beach—the golden hour glow, the warm sand and salty breezes. If you’ve ever thought, “This would be the perfect time for a family photo,” you’re absolutely right.

Beach sessions are some of my favorite to photograph, especially along the beautiful NJ shore. Whether you’re in Stone Harbor, Avalon, Wildwood, or Ocean City, here are a few tips to make your session smooth, fun, and stress-free.

1. Timing is everything (golden hour is your friend)

We’re talking about that dreamy light right after sunrise or just before sunset. The beach practically glows, everyone looks good, and you don’t have to squint into harsh midday sun.

Pro tip: Evening golden hour is usually best for little ones who don’t love a 5am wake-up call

2. Dress the part—without overthinking it

You don’t have to go full matchy-matchy, but neutrals and soft pastels always photograph beautifully on the beach. Think flowy dresses, linen shirts, and barefoot vibes. And yes, it’s okay if your toddler refuses to wear pants. It’s the beach. HA!!!

3. Go with the (ocean) flow

Wind happens. Sand happens. And that’s kind of the point. The most magical photos come when you let go of perfection and just enjoy being together. Laugh, snuggle, run, chase waves—your connection is the most important thing we’ll capture.

4. Let the kids lead

If your little one would rather dig in the sand than smile at the camera? Perfect. I’ll meet them at their level. Candid, playful shots often end up being the favorites—and I promise, no one will miss the stiff, cheesy grins.

5. Make it part of your vacation

If you’re staying in Avalon, Stone Harbor, or Ocean City NJ, a beach session is a wonderful way to remember this chapter of life—whether it’s your baby’s first time dipping toes in the ocean or your teen’s last summer before college.

Sessions are relaxed and fun—more like a mini adventure than a formal photo shoot.

Locations I Love

Each beach town has its own personality:

  • Stone Harbor: Classic and peaceful, perfect for wide open beaches and soft, pastel skies.
  • Avalon: A little luxe, a little laid-back—great dunes, calm beaches, and amazing sunsets.
  • Wildwood: A bit more bold—boardwalk backdrops, colorful lifeguard stands, and nostalgic vibes.
  • Ocean City NJ: Ideal for families, with easy beach access and a clean, friendly atmosphere.

Ready to hit the sand?

If you’re headed down the shore this summer and want to make some magic on the beach, I’d love to plan a session with you. Whether you’re building sandcastles in Ocean City or walking the dunes in Avalon, I’ll be there to capture the moments that matter.
