As a family photographer, I’ve seen firsthand how important our furry family members are. Whether it’s your loyal golden retriever or the cat who rules the house, pets are absolutely welcome at your family session!
Here are my best tips for making it fun, relaxed, and chaos-free when you include your pet:
1. Let me know in advance
If I know your dog (or bunny or bearded dragon!) is coming, I can help choose the best location and offer suggestions to make it go smoothly.

2. Bring a helper
Having a friend or grandparent who can hold the leash or take the pet home after a few shots makes everything smoother. This can be key when you are also ready to do just family and not include the dog.
3. Pack treats and a favorite toy
Bribes work. So do squeaky distractions. These little things can help get those alert, happy ears!

4. Think about timing
A walk before the session can help get some wiggles out, especially for high-energy dogs.
I always recommend arriving at least 10 minutes early so your dog has time to sniff around, unwind from the car ride, and get comfortable in their new surroundings.
Giving them that little buffer makes a big difference once it’s time to start snapping photos — they’ll be calmer, more focused, and ready to shine!

5. Relax and laugh
Your dog might look the wrong way or photobomb a shot—and that’s okay! Often those are the most loved photos later.

Including your pet makes your session even more you. And I’m 100% here for it.
